Step by step

How To Create PDF Bookmarks

Turn a flat document into one with a real outline — add, rename, nest and retarget bookmarks in a live tree, then write it into the file.

  1. 1

    Upload your PDF

Drop in a document and its existing outline appears as a tree — chapters with sub-sections folded underneath. No outline yet? Create bookmark on page 1 starts one, anchored to whatever page you're viewing. Files are deleted after 2 hours.

The bookmarks workspace: the blue Create bookmark on page 1 button, the Bookmarks tree with Chapter 1 expanded to Section 1.1 above Chapter 2, the Page 1 of 3 box and the search row
  2. 2

    Shape the tree

Right-click any row: Create adds a child, Rename edits inline (a double-click works too), Update opens the title-and-page dialog, Set page number retargets without touching the name, and Delete removes it. Drag rows to reorder them, or drop one onto another to nest it.

A highlight-selected bookmark row with its right-click menu open: Create, Rename, Update, Set page number and Delete The Update bookmark dialog: the Title box holding “Section 1.1”, the Page box holding 2, and the Save button
  3. 3

    Search, jump and apply

The Page box jumps the preview anywhere in the document; the search box highlights matches on the page and the ‹ › arrows step through them — click a highlighted line and the Add dialog opens prefilled with its text and page. Apply changes writes the whole tree into the file as its real outline, ready for any reader's sidebar.

  • Live outline tree

Chapters nest with sections; the tree redraws the moment you edit.

  • Right-click anything

Create, Rename, Update, Set page number, Delete — one menu on every row.

  • Drag to shape

Reorder bookmarks by dragging; drop one onto another to nest it.

  • Search & jump

Matches highlight on the page — click one and the Add dialog opens prefilled.

  • Baked into the file

Apply changes writes a real PDF outline every viewer shows in its sidebar.

  • Private by default

No account, no watermark — and every file is automatically deleted after 2 hours.

Create Bookmarks — frequently asked questions

Why add bookmarks to a PDF?

They give the reader a table of contents — click straight to a chapter in any viewer. Existing outlines can be renamed, renumbered or extended too.

Is Create Bookmarks free?

Yes — Create Bookmarks is free right here in your browser, with no watermark and no sign-up. Every tool on the site works the same way.

Do I need an account to use Create Bookmarks?

No. Accounts are optional — they keep your credits, API keys and settings together. The tools work signed-out.

What happens to my file?

Every upload is stored under an unguessable id and deleted automatically after 2 hours. Nothing is listed, shared or emailed anywhere.

Can I run Create Bookmarks from the API?

Yes — every tool has a REST endpoint. An API call for this tool costs 10 credits per file; browser use stays free. See the Plans & pricing page for plans and the API page for the endpoint list.
